All Along The Watchtower.flac:9412f9b669b7dfc27188104f693d9337 Review by Jason Ankeny on internet: After spending so many of his autumnal years on the road -- each performance just another point on the seemingly infinite continuum that is his Never-Ending Tour -- Bob Dylan rarely if ever plays a show of true historical significance and curiosity these days. But his August 3, 2002, appearance at the Newport Folk Festival marked Dylan's first return to the venerable event since his landmark 1965 showcase, when the decision to play an electric set backed by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band created a fissure in the folk consciousness that never quite healed. Almost four decades on, Dylan's no less wily or unpredictable, and even if his 2002 Newport set didn't alter the shape of popular music, the bootleg After 37 Years, Bring It All Back to Newport is a compelling listen nevertheless. Flanked by his longtime support band featuring guitarist Charlie Sexton, Dylan delivers a rousing, far-reaching set stuffed with fan favorites like "Positively 4th Street," "Tangled Up in Blue," and "Subterranean Homesick Blues." Most notably, he also summons "Like a Rolling Stone" and "Mr. Tambourine Man," two of the five songs that comprised his brief 1965 appearance. For all of the songs' familiarity, Dylan still manages to explore new wrinkles and nuances in his lyrics, and his weathered vocals cut like broken glass. Note to collectors: while there's nothing inherently flawed about After 37 Years, Bring It All Back to Newport, the Crystal Cat label's Newport 2002 features the same material in improved, soundboard-quality fidelity -- caveat emptor.
