But we were not disappointed and got to see another excellent set by Bob Dylan and The Band. Our seats were not as good as our Stadium section location for the afternoon show. This time, we were in Balcony seats, up on the left side, just behind the Press Box seats. We were a little further than halfway back, but the sound system was elevated, for unobstructed views of the stage, so everything sounded as good as it did at the afternoon show. The setlist was almost identical to the afternoon show, with only a minor adjustment to the order of the songs and a couple of song substitutions. Like the afternoon show, there was no introduction. The lights went down and The Band came out and took there places, with a big round of applause erupting, as Dylan, with his Telecaster guitar strapped on, took his place at the microphone. After a few moments of tuning, hey opened with "Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine)", ending with Bob's only spoken words of the evening; "It's nice to see you!". They continued with "Lay Lady Lay", "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues", "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35", "It Ain't Me Babe", and "Ballad Of A Thin Man". Bob left the stage and The Band did a short set of their own, beginning with "Stage Fright', followed by "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "King Harvest (Has Surely Come)", "This Wheel's On Fire", "I Shall Be Released" and "Up On Cripple Creek". Dylan returned to the stage to join them for "All Along The Watchtower", "Ballad Of Hollis Brown" and "Knocking On Heaven's Door". The Band left the stage and Bob did a great acoustic set, featuring "Blowin' In The Wind", "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright", "Gates Of Eden" and "Love Minus Zero/No Limit". "It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) ended the acoustic set and was, once again, the highlight of the show. The audience listened to that song intently and were in total silence, until, after the line; "but even the President of the United States sometimes must have to stand naked.", when they broke out into cheers and applause for lyrics that focused on the current frustrations with President Nixon, the Watergate scandal, the Viet Nam war and the state of politics at the time. After that profound performance, The Band took the stage and lightened the mood again, with four more of their classics, "Rag Mama Rag", "When You Awake", "The Shape I'm In" and "The Weight". Dylan rejoined them for two new songs, "Forever Young" and "Something There Is About You", from the new album "Planet Waves" (released three days after this show) and ended the set with "Like A Rolling Stone". Since we had been fortunate enough to have been at the afternoon show, we knew that there would be an encore number, but we were puzzled when they did "Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine)", the song that they had opened with, for a second time. But who could complain? We had seen Bob Dylan and The Band. Two great individual acts, together, twice in one day. And they performed, flawlessly, all the great songs that we could have wished for. These shows were, truly, a once in a lifetime experience.
