The tape apparently originates from two days spent rehearsing in Verona, Italy prior to the 1984 European Tour [May 27-28th], and the tape itself appears to be 45 minutes of two separate sessions – I would suspect the first is from the 27th as there is much more jamming and working on new material, and that the second part is from the afternoon of the 28th as Dylan tries to whip the band into shape. The recording quality is spot-on. It probably even has the edge on the previous '84 Tour Rehearsals The instrumentals are not as boring as may at first sight appear as Dylan plays some nice harmonica on them, and the songs do have some kind of structure, they are not just aimless jams. The source for the tape credits Carlos Santana as on guitar on this side, though I'm not necessarily convinced. 'To Each His Own' is the old crooner's classic written by Ray Evans and Jay Livingstone. However the most interesting songs are the two original Dylan compositions heard here for the first time: 'Dirty Lies' and 'Almost Done'. I’d like to convince myself that 'Almost Done' is in fact 'Angel Of Rain', the other new Dylan song (aside from 'Enough Is Enough' and 'Dirty Lies') to be mentioned at the Verona press conference. It has the right tune for a song called 'Angel Of Rain', though no self-evident lyrical similarities. In fact we have heard a brief snippet of 'Almost Done' before. It is the fragment of a song on the Beverly Theatre tape which I christened 'The Dawn Is Gonna Shine' (song number 24 in 'Master Of The Tracks'). Dylan is still clearly working on the song, though the melody seems pretty well worked-out. The second side of the tape is much more a final run-through of the live set. Indeed the eleven songs performed consist of the entire first set at the opening show plus band versions of 'To Ramona' and 'Girl From The North Country', two songs only performed acoustically on the tour.
