For Sale Or Just On The Shelf is an attempt to gather the circulating Bob Dylan Columbia Studios Recording Session Outtakes (1961-1964) into a reasonably logical, hopefully useful, accessible compilation. It is arranged chronologically and includes as accurate as possible identifications for the session takes and sources. Selected alternate mixes and live performances are included for interest and comparison., Quality of the sources: Ages ago this project started as an effort to develop a more complete, better-sounding Freewheelin' Outtakes collection - but strictly for fans and not for sale. Too bad that ancient, often revered bootleg didn't always use the best sources, nor with its several clipped ends/beginnings, did it have the best of care in its preparation. Well, as things will, this outtakes project got out of hand, and with much thanks to many generous contributors, its expansion beyond the FW Sessions was inevitable. As always, low-generation sources and good transfers from the originals was a goal (always will be). There is no processing or tinkering with the sound - save for selected speed adjustments where necessary., Accuracy of the information: There's light at the end of the tunnel, but we ain't there yet. Particularly, the accuracy of some take numbers may or may not be suspect. These days, discerning listeners/readers realize there is little in regards to Dylan studio recording history that is cast in stone. We've been told a multiple of things (much of it conflicting) by discographers, Columbia Records, and yes, by those in the know out here in the "community". What one reads and hears from any single source could or could not be as reliable as that from another. The same goes for what is found in FSorJOTS. At least we have tried to consider and evaluate the available key sources. In some cases, assumptions (and suppositions) were made, but those were kept to as few as possible. Consider the information herein only as a guide (not as writing on tablets) and use it perhaps more as an aid in denoting takes from one another. If you are aware of something different, conflicting, or erroneous, don't hesitate to make yourself heard in the appropriate forums and newsgroups. Or publish your own discography. We promise to consider your info (and guesses) along with all the rest. And, if elegant minutia such as take numbers; etc., is not your thing anyway then just sit back and enjoy the music!, So, now let's get down to what is what:, This file package contains a current update to the FSorJOTS project originally assembled circa spring 2002. There are a few new tracks. Several tracks are replaced with versions having improved sound. Track listings have been revised accordingly, as have the supplemental notes. There are also selected artwork changes., Changes to the tracks:, 1. Sally Gal (CO70086-1) from Bootleg Series 7 is a new version added as disc 1, track 7., 2. Baby, Please Don't Go, stereo version of CO70099-3(?), from the NDH 3-song sampler is added as disc 5, track 20., 3. Les KoKay's "Confusion #9" replaces the alt. (a) version of CO-76982-(?) on disc 2, track 3., 4. Les KoKay's "Confusion #8" replaces the alt. mono mix of CO76982-11 on disc 4, track 12., 5. Les KoKay's "Confusion #4" is added as the "Masterpieces" mono version of CO76982-11 at disc 5, track 21., 6. Replaced the Dec 6, 1962, session with an "upgraded" version (see disc 2, tracks 12 - 23)., 7. Mr Tambourine Man w/Jack Elliott is the stereo version from Bootleg Series 7 as a, replacement at disc 4, track 5. This track now has extra producer comments and contains, the aborted take 1., Note: Minor speed adjustments were made as part of changes 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6., ENJOY! And remember: Buy Bob Dylan's records (you owe it to him; you owe it to yourself). Hopefully, one day stop-gap projects such as FSorJOTS will be part of the past when the Dylan treasures at Columbia's Vaults are properly for sale and not just on the shelf!
