I helped out on a few recordings done by a friend of mine &, with some borrowed equipment, ended up doing a few of my own, with varying degrees of success. I probably gave it up by 1989 or 1990 at the latest. I never lost my love of listening to bootlegs, I just didn't have the time or the equipment (or the interest, if I'm honest) to go make my own recordings. Fast forward to 2014 and I was talking to that same old friend who I'd helped on my first recording outings back in the 80s. I was telling him that Steve Earle was coming to Bangor, Northern Ireland, and that I'd gotten a ticket. He said that he'd love to go, but just couldn't make it. He also mentioned that it'd be nice to have a recording of the show. I didn't have much cash and reckoned that any kind of decent recorder was beyond my immediate range. It seemed to be a lost cause. I was somewhat surprised and perplexed when, a few days later, a package arrived for me - one Sony Linear PCM Recorder PCM-M10. The instruction was simple - learn how to use it and send back the results. I tried ... I really did! I went to the Steve Earle gig and managed to record nearly three hours of very high quality silence. I spent the next year or so frequently screwing up recordings of various acts such as Stiff Little Fingers at the Ulster Hall, The Hold Steady at The Limelight and a second Steve Earle gig, also at The Limelight. I have, however, gotten better and while I'll never be among the masters like Spot or Bach or Mike Millard, I can usually be relied upon to provide a listenable recording. As I'm writing this, I've had 18 performances where I've been happy enough to release the audio to the wider world and now I'm trying my hand at Dylan ... his were the first bootlegs I ever listened to ... indeed, for me the term 'bootleg' was synonymous with Dylan for the longest time. I don't mean to sound overly dramatic, but I really feel that I'm finally paying back some of my dues - for more than 25 years I've listened to Dylan's albums and had my experiences, knowledge, and enjoyment tempered and expanded by all the bootlegs I could get my hands on. Now, after all these years, I feel that I am able to contribute to this great effort. Anyway, whatever you make of my motivations and my rambling memoirs, I hope you enjoy the recording and pick up a little of the thrill of seeing and hearing Dylan in concert. [HFRU]
