rs audiowhore, 42nd anniversary edition, Pitch and speed corrected with new mix (by audiowhore), ORIGINAL info notes-, Taper: RS, Source: Flac files from taper., Equipment: "Taped using a 3-head portable cassette recorder and electret condenser mic which was possibly above-average equipment for the typical audience stealth taper in those days.", From taper's master list:, Dec 10, 1978 --- CHARLOTTE, NC --- Tape --- C-127, C-128, C-129 >> DAT D-78-12 >> CD-78-31, 32 (27 songs; complete) --- backup on MD-78-3, MD-78-4, MD-78-5, These are *stereo master cassettes* ., D-78-12 is the master for the 12/10/78 show on CD: Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte., As of Aug. 2005, this show has been newly remastered to CDr from the original master cassettes., Of course, my Charlotte recording has been commercially booted (and Knoxville 2/5 too), but the quality of the raw (undoctored) transfers tends to beat the bootleg discs by quite a ways., I recently did a new transfer (via improved equipment & connections) to CDr from the original Charlotte Maxell cassettes which are still in surprisingly good condition, and that one sounds best ever., ===========, audiowhore 2020 mixing notes-, Charlotte 1978 is one of my favourite audience recordings of Bob's career., The taper 'RS' did an amazing job capturing a fantastic performance., By the end of Bob's long 1978 world tour, things were really cooking., We know this because of tapes like Charlotte., But please have a listen to this 2020 version I have worked on and enjoy it again., I've played the RS master tape version and the bootleg 'Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte' which was taken from the same tape, many times over the last 20+ years., However, I recently realised that the pitch and speed of both versions were off., They each run too slow and the pitch equally too low., To fix this, I found that the speed of the whole show needed to be increased by 3.29% and the pitch increased by an equal amount of 0.58 Semitones., This gets the instruments back in tune and Bob's voice also as he sang and spoke on the night., I then mixed the show to better balance the range of frequencies of all the instruments., The tape flips and drop-outs in the original recording were also cleaned up., The most noticeable drop was during Mr. Tambourine Man., Rather than leaving that as silence, as is heard on the original, I just removed that gap., When analogue recordings are copied and / or digitised, it is very normal for them to play back at a slightly different speed to the original recording., When hearing these subsequent versions of the original tape, sometimes the pitch and speed change is minor and largely unnoticeable, sometime it is obvious., Anything around 2% (or more) variance is pretty clear to hear that it's not right., Thankfully it is now fairly easy to correct where necessary., Sometimes it works and the results give the recording an immediate improvement., Sometimes if the tape is high-gen there's not much you can do other than try to locate a version closer to the master and try again., With this Charlotte recording coming from the RS master, the results sound great to me., See what you think., Thanks again to the original taper for doing such a great job and sharing your tapes., All Bob fans who were not there in Charlotte 42 years ago have been able to live vicariously through your recording ever since., I hope that you're still around and get to hear this.
