Barry began taping in the early '70s and remained active until a few years ago, though his later work focused more on video than audio. In his heyday, Barry was a dual threat, recording the shows he attended and photographing, too, with impressive results., His master tapes circa 1973-83 include previously uncirculated shows and recordings of David Bowie, Genesis, Roxy Music, Fleetwood Mac, Rory Gallagher, Eric Clapton, Supertramp, The Who and others., Beyond his own captures, Barry was a close friend of the late, great Mike "The Mike" Millard, attending many concerts with him as well as recording nights and shows Mike didn't cover. Like Jim R, Barry shared Mike the Mike tapes with JEMS that are not in general circulation for our Lost and Found series., This week's release is another instance of Millard and Goldstein doubling up, as both recorded Dylan at the Universal Amphitheatre on June 3, 1978. Millard's recording of the show goes all the way back to Vol. Two(!) of the Lost and Found Mike the MICrphone Tapes series and can be found at the link in the contrast clause., Millard arrived late to the gig, Dylan's third night at the venue, missing the first two songs entirely and joining the third, "Baby Stop Crying," in progress. Fortunately, Barry is there from the jump and gets the start of the show Millard missed. But as has been the case before with long shows in our series, Barry's batteries being to run out of juice during "Just Like a Woman," before dying entirely in the closing song of the night, "The Times They Are A-Changin'," causing major pitch issues in the last 25 or so minutes of the performance., As he has graciously done time and time again for JEMS, Professor Goody not only offered small pitch corrections for the recording up to that point, but got in there and made multiple major pitch adjustments to make the end of the show as listenable as possible. It's not perfect, but it is WAY better than the original source., For my money, this is one of Barry's highest-quality captures, with no meaningful distortion and clear, up-close sound.
